Gender and Diversity: Areas of Action
Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
All governments of the region have ratified the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the IDB work in this area helps its member countries live up to their CEDAW commitments.
Indigenous Peoples
The IDB aims to create the conditions for indigenous peoples to thrive and grow in harmony with their surroundings by capitalizing on the potential of their cultural, natural, and social assets according to their own priorities.
African descendants
The ongoing exclusion of African descendants from the economic and cultural lives of LAC nations has an impact on democratic governance, citizen security, and the ability of several subregions to meet strategic development targets.
IDB and Diversity
Latin America is one of the most unequal regions of the world. Among other factors, inequality is partly explained by the lack of opportunities determined at birth by race, ethnicity, and gender. The IDB has a long standing commitment to promote equity and social inclusion in the region.
The Bank has created a Multi-donor Gender and Diversity Fund in 2009. The IDB has approved a new Operational Policy on Gender Equality in Development, which calls for vigorous efforts to mainstream gender in projects and analytical work. It also calls for direct investment in projects that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The IDB proactively promotes social inclusion of African descendant communities and indigenous peoples as stakeholders in the development of Latin America and the Caribbean, through direct investments and the application of safeguards in IDB projects. Read more about Gender and Diversity >>
